#SciBar: Tunnelling Around in Circles for Science: Civil Engineering for CERN’s Large Hadron Collider and tunnelling studies for a 100km Future Circular Collider
SciBar is a series of free and fascinating science-themed talks.
CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, has started planning for an upgrade of their particle accelerator straddling the France/Swiss border. Studies are currently under way for the planning and construction of the Future Circular Collider (FCC), which will push the energy and intensity frontiers of particle colliders.
In order to achieve this goal, the FCC will require extensive civil underground infrastructure including a 100km long, 6m diameter tunnel ring, 20 large shafts, several caverns with spans of up to 35m and multiple connecting tunnels and galleries.
John Osborne will present the civil engineering works that have already been completed for LHC and the future plans for a 100km tunnel.
